Isar Aerospace has reached orbit on its second flight. The success is a big moment for Europe’s space race. But the real test starts now, as the German startup and the SpaceX rival looks to turn one historic launch into a lasting business.
Isar Aerospace reaches orbit on second flight
As reported by CNBC, Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum rocket reached orbit on September 5 after launching from the Spaceport of Andoya in Norway. The flight also deployed its payloads into low Earth orbit. It was only the second flight of the rocket, making the result a major step for the young company. The startup is now looking to increase both production and launch speed. The Munich-based firm is aiming to become a strong new player in the commercial launch market. It is often seen as a rival to SpaceX, which remains far bigger.
Spectrum is a two-stage rocket. It stands 28 metres tall and is two metres wide. The rocket is powered by ten engines and has been designed to deliver payloads weighing up to 1,000 kilograms into low Earth orbit. The mission was called “Onward and Upward”. It also met an important European goal. The launch helped Isar complete the first major milestone under the European Launcher Challenge. The programme has received support from the European Space Agency.
A major win for Europe and SpaceX rival
This success means more than one good rocket flight. Europe has long depended on a small group of launch providers. The new result shows that a private European company can build and fly its own orbital rocket. The mission successfully completed key steps such as stage separation, second stage ignition, reaching orbital speed and a circularization burn. The company then completed spacecraft separation and deployed its customer payloads.
The mission carried five CubeSats and a technology demonstration. The payloads came from universities, startups and other European groups through a German Space Agency programme backed by ESA’s Boost! scheme. The result is also important because the first Spectrum flight did not go as planned. This time, the rocket reached orbit and finished its key tasks.
Bigger plans by SpaceX rival after historic launch
Now comes the harder part. Isar Aerospace wants to move from a successful test to regular launches. Chief Commercial Officer Stella Guillen said the company has a pipeline which is worth around €10B. She also said the space industry needs much more launch capacity. However, the company has not said how much of the pipeline is made up of firm contracts. The company has also been working to expand its launch network beyond Europe, with plans linked to a Canadian launch site.
The next step is already being prepared. Spectrum vehicles number 3 through number 7 are already in the process of production. A new 40,000 square-metre factory near Munich is also being developed, with a planned capacity of up to 40 rockets each year. The company still has a long way to go before it can match SpaceX’s path. Yet reaching orbit on only its second flight is a strong start. For Europe, it offers something even bigger: another path to space built at home.

Isar Aerospace has earned this moment, but one successful flight is not enough. The real challenge is repeat launches, steady growth and reliable service. Still, Europe now has a promising private launch player, and that could matter a lot in the years ahead.
