Apple Maps has now joined Google Maps in renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for users in the United States. But the change is not the same everywhere, and that is where the story gets interesting.
Apple Maps follows Google with Lake America update
As reported by The Economic Times, the ‘Lake Ontario’ is now known as ‘Lake America’ in Apple Maps for users using the service in the United States. The change came after US President Donald Trump issued an executive order calling for the lake to be given the new name. Google Maps had already made a similar change for people using its service in America. The update does not apply in the same way around the world. People in Canada will still see the name Lake Ontario on Apple Maps.
The move comes at a tense time between Washington and Ottawa. Talks between the two sides broke down, while the US imposed new 50% tariffs on Canadian goods. Canada responded with plans for matching tariffs. The lake name change has therefore drawn even more attention. Apple has not publicly given a detailed reason for the update. Still, the timing is clear. The company followed a move already made by its biggest rival in digital maps.
Why the name has become so controversial?
Both Apple Maps and Google Maps now show “Lake America” to users in the US. However, MapQuest has refused to make the change and continues to use Lake Ontario. That difference has turned map apps into part of a much wider debate. The US government says its official database now uses the new name. The US Presidents gave orders to the Department of the Interior 30 days to update the Geographic Names Information Service, the country’s official place-name database.
Canada has rejected the new name. Ontario Premier Doug Ford even announced a sign at the lake saying “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also pushed back against the American move. The history of the lake adds another layer. Four of the five Great Lakes have names linked to Indigenous words. Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five and has long carried its original name.
Apple Maps apps now show different names
For users, the change is simple to see but harder to explain. An American checking Apple Maps may now see “Lake America”. A Canadian user looking at the same body of water can still see Lake Ontario. Google follows a similar system. Google said its maps service updates names to match official government sources. This means the label can change based on where the user is viewing the map.
Not every business enterprise has agreed. MapQuest has openly refused to change the name and has kept Lake Ontario on its service. That decision has brought fresh attention to the older mapping platform. For Apple users, the new label may look like a small software update. Yet behind those two words sits a much bigger argument about history, borders and who gets to decide what places are called.
