Tesla’s Cybercab launch has brought the future of driverless travel to Austin. But just as the new robotaxi started its first rides, a NHTSA safety probe has raised a key question, has Tesla certify the unusual car in the right way?
Tesla Cybercab launches as NHTSA steps in
As reported by NDTV, Tesla has started running its two-seat Cybercab robotaxis in Austin, Texas. The cars have no steering wheel, pedals or outside mirrors. They are built to drive on their own. The launch is a key step in Elon Musk’s plan for a wider driverless ride network. Tesla plans to add cars and expand the service. But the launch was quickly followed by action from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA.
The agency opened an investigation on September 4 into Tesla’s self-certification of up to 1,000 Cybercabs. NHTSA wants to study how Tesla used technical data to show that the vehicles meet federal safety standards. The issue is simple. US safety rules were mainly written for cars with human drivers. The Cybercab has no normal controls. Regulators are checking how Tesla decided which rules apply to its design.
Why the certification is under review?
The probe raises questions over the way Tesla certified the Cybercab before its wider rollout. In the US, car makers generally certify their own vehicles against federal rules, while NHTSA checks compliance through later oversight. The agency is also looking at whether Tesla decided that some Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards do not apply to the Cybercab.
NHTSA has been working on rule changes for self-driving vehicles. The agency has proposed changes that could make it easier for purpose-built robotaxis to operate without normal human controls. But those changes are not fully in place yet. Existing rules still apply. This puts Tesla in a difficult spot. The company says the Cybercab is ready for service. Regulators now want to see the reasoning behind that claim. Only 45 Cybercabs were registered in Texas when the probe opened, according to state records. Yet the review covers about 1,000 vehicles.

What happens next for Tesla?
The probe does not by itself mean that the Cybercab is unsafe or that the Austin service must stop. NHTSA says the review is meant to check Tesla’s certification process and technical data. Amazon-backed Zoox also uses vehicles without normal driving controls and recently received a federal exemption for paid service.
Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Its next steps will be watched closely. The Cybercab was built from the start as a driverless vehicle. That could help Tesla build a larger robotaxi business network. But the legal and safety rules must keep pace with the technology. For now, the Austin launch is both a milestone and a test. Tesla has put its bold robotaxi plan on the road. NHTSA is now asking whether the car reached that road through the right regulatory path.
