Amazon is facing a major choice in New York City. The company says it may cut 5,000 delivery jobs and close 15 local facilities if a new labour bill becomes law. The plan has raised questions about worker rights, business costs and the future of fast delivery.
What the bill would change for Amazon?
As reported by Firstpost, the proposed Delivery Protection Act is backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. It would need Amazon to employ more than 5,000 drivers who now work through about 40 outside delivery firms across the city. Amazon uses these firms to hire and manage drivers. The bill would change that setup and make the company rethink how it handles the final part of each delivery. Supporters say the change could bring better pay.
Amazon has warned that it could close 15 last mile sites and move its delivery work out of New York City if the bill passes. The closures could also put around 2,000 warehouse workers at risk. That would mean the possible impact could reach far beyond the drivers named in the proposal. No vote has been set yet. This leaves time for talks and changes to the bill.
Why is Amazon pushing back
The company says its delivery system depends on local small businesses. These firms run routes, hire staff and help packages reach homes across the city. The company argues that the bill could put more than 5,000 jobs at risk and force it to move its work to sites outside the city. Amazon may shift some work to facilities near the New Jersey Turnpike. The company also says fewer city sites could mean slower delivery and higher prices.
A study paid for by Amazon estimated that the bill could cost New Yorkers about 664 dollars more each year, or around 5.20 dollars per package. The estimate also includes deliveries made by other firms. It is a company funded study, so its figures should be seen in that context. The bill has also raised worries among delivery partners. Some say they could lose their businesses if Amazon changes its model.

Quebec adds to the concern
The debate has brought back Amazon’s move in Quebec, Canada. Last year, the company shut seven warehouses after a union drive at its Laval site. The closures affected about 1,900 warehouse workers and 2,800 contracted delivery workers. Labour groups in New York fear Amazon could take a similar step if the city changes its rules.
The city now faces a choice. Stronger rules could help protect workers, but a major change may also put jobs and small delivery firms at risk. The final result will depend on the bill’s wording and whether the city and Amazon can reach a deal. For now, the threat is not a confirmed job cut. It is a warning tied to a bill that has yet to face a vote. Workers, contractors and customers will be watching what happens next.
Author’s Opinion
The city must protect workers without putting their jobs at greater risk. Amazon must also explain its plans clearly. A fair deal should give drivers better conditions while helping small firms and customers avoid sudden harm.
