The SpaceX Starship launch ended in a dramatic last-second stop. The giant rocket was ready to fly, but an engine issue forced an automatic abort. The sudden decision has now pushed the next test flight back by at least a few days.

Engine issue stops launch at the last moment

SpaceX came within seconds of launching Starship Flight 13 from Starbase, Texas. But the mission was stopped just before liftoff after problems appeared during engine start-up. As reported by CNN, the countdown reached its final moments before the launch system called an automatic abort. Smoke and flames appeared beneath the rocket as the engines began to ignite, but the vehicle never left the launch pad.

As reported by The Hindu, some of the Super Heavy booster’s 33 Raptor engines failed to start properly. Elon Musk later said two engines would be replaced before another launch attempt. He also said the next launch could happen early next week if everything goes as planned. The launch team safely stopped the mission after the engine problem appeared. Engineers then began removing fuel from the rocket before moving ahead with inspections. The company has not reported any damage to the launch vehicle.

Mission delayed but goals remain unchanged

Even though the launch was cancelled, the mission itself has not changed. As reported by MSN, four engines failed during the ignition sequence. That was enough for the onboard safety system to cancel the launch before the rocket could leave the ground. The flight was expected to carry 20 next-generation Starlink satellites into space. The mission would also have tested several upgrades on the latest version of Starship.

As reported by The Hindu, this was the first time a full-scale Starship mission had been stopped at the final second after engine ignition had already started. The safety system worked exactly as designed by preventing a risky launch.  The rocket remains one of the most important projects for SpaceX. Starship is expected to support future Moon missions for NASA while also helping carry larger Starlink satellite groups into orbit. Engineers will now study the engine issue before setting a new launch date.

What happens next for SpaceX?

SpaceX has already started preparing for another attempt. The company plans to replace the two faulty Raptor engines before they decide to carry out more checks. The engineers at SpaceX want to make sure that the booster is fully ready before they decide to begin another countdown.

The delay also had a major financial effect on the business. As reported by Yahoo Finance, SpaceX shares fell after news of the scrubbed launch, as investors reacted to the unexpected delay. Despite the setback, experts say launch cancellations like this are part of rocket development. Engineers design safety systems to stop flights whenever something does not look right.

For now, the engineers at SpaceX remain focused on learning from the major engine issue. They do not want to rush to another attempt. Once engineers complete their checks, Starship Flight 13 will return to the launch pad with the same goals and the same long-term mission of improving the world’s most powerful rocket.

Stopping the launch was the right call. A last-second delay may disappoint fans, but safety always comes first. If engineers fix the engine problem properly, this short setback could make future Starship flights much more reliable.
