Elon Musk says SpaceX’s AI business could soon become its biggest money maker. His bold forecast has raised fresh questions about how fast the company can shift from rockets and satellites toward artificial intelligence.
Musk expects AI revenue to take the lead
As reported by Business Insider, Musk told SpaceX workers that AI revenue could pass all other company revenue as early as September. He also said the gap could grow wider in the fourth quarter. The claim marks a major change for a company best known for rockets and Starlink. Musk now sees AI as a key part of its future. He has also linked the plans to Grok.
The target seems to be bold because AI is not yet the company’s largest source of income. SpaceX reported $7.81 billion in revenue for the second quarter. AI made $2.56 billion of that total. Its connectivity business, led by Starlink, brought in $4.29 billion.
Grok and AI compute drive the push
SpaceX is building large systems to train and run AI models. Musk has also set a goal of reaching 10 gigawatts of AI computing capacity by the end of 2027. As reported by The Next Web, Musk has been pushing workers to focus more on AI as the company expands its computing work. The plan also includes using the huge amount of information inside SpaceX to improve Grok.
Musk said Grok could be trained using the company’s internal knowledge. That could include information and input from employees. He did not give details on how the training process would work. SpaceX’s AI growth has already been helped by cloud and computing deals with major technology firms. The company is also spending heavily on AI systems and data centres.
The spending is large, as SpaceX’s second-quarter capital spending reached about $18.4 billion, with a major share linked to AI infrastructure. The AI unit itself was still losing money during the quarter.
A new future for SpaceX?
SpaceX has spent years building its name around launches and Starlink. AI now looks set to become a much bigger part of that story. As reported by Yahoo Finance, Musk believes AI revenue could overtake the company’s other businesses as soon as September. He expects the lead to grow later in the year.
It bought xAI, expanded its AI computing work and has looked at new ways to place computing power at huge scale. Musk has also spoken about making AI a dominant source of revenue rather than just another business line. Still, revenue growth will not tell the whole story. AI needs huge amounts of power, chips and data. Those costs are high. The business also faces strong rivals in a fast-moving market.
For now, Musk’s prediction gives investors and workers a clear message. SpaceX is no longer thinking only about space. Its next big race may be in AI, and the company wants that race to become its most profitable one.
