Apple is changing its AI plan for China. The iPhone maker has trained a model made for the Chinese market with help from Alibaba. The move comes at a key time, as local phone brands race ahead with their own AI tools.
Apple builds a China-specific AI model
As reported by Telegraph India, three sources familiar with the project revealed that Apple is working on a China-focused large language model in collaboration with Alibaba. They asked not to be named because the plan is not public. The move is a change from Apple’s earlier plan. The company had been looking to use AI models from Chinese firms for its products in the country. US tools such as ChatGPT and Claude are not available there.
Apple has not yet said how its own model will work with Alibaba’s Qwen model or other local tools. The full plan is still not clear. The new model could give Apple more control over how AI works on its devices in China. It also gives the company a way to build an AI service that fits local rules. Apple Intelligence is expected to reach China in the coming months after an iOS update. The service is aimed at iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro users.
Alibaba plays a key role
As reported by Reuters, Alibaba helped Apple train the new model. The two firms have already been working together on Apple’s AI plan for China. Alibaba’s Qwen model is also set to be part of the Chinese version of Apple Intelligence. Baidu technology may also be used. This means Apple’s China plan will not rely on just one AI system.
The timing is important. Apple has faced strong competition from Chinese phone brands, including Huawei. Local firms moved faster with built-in AI tools, while Apple’s AI rollout in China was delayed. The Chinese internet regulator registered Apple’s generative AI service last month. That removed a major step in the path to launch. Apple’s new approach could give it more control while still using local support to meet China’s needs. The shift could help the company close part of its AI gap in an overseas market.

A new AI fight in China
Apple’s China problem is not only about technology. It is also about rules, local rivals and user demand. China is a major market for the iPhone maker, so the success of Apple Intelligence there matters. As reported by Yahoo Finance, the company’s lack of AI features has been seen as one factor hurting its position as buyers moved toward local phones with built-in AI assistants. The partnership also has a wider meaning.
Apple is a US company working with Alibaba, a major Chinese tech and business group, at a time when the two countries face tension over technology and AI. The new model may help Apple offer a more controlled AI service in China. But many details are still unknown, including how much the company’s own model will do and how it will work beside Qwen and other tools. For now, Apple is taking a different path in China. Instead of depending only on outside models, it is building more of its own AI while keeping local partners close. The next step will be seeing whether that plan can help Apple win back users.
Author’s Opinion
Apple’s move looks practical rather than dramatic. China is too important for the company to ignore its AI gap. Building its own model may give Apple more control, but the real test will come when users can finally try the service.
