The Apple AI server plan could take the tech giant back into a market it left years ago. But there is a surprise in the story: Nvidia may help connect its chips, adding a fresh twist to Apple’s reported 2029 return.
Apple plans a return to servers
As reported by Reuters, Apple could be returning to the server market with a new AI server built around its own M8 Ultra chips. The plan is still early, and the machine is not expected to reach customers until 2029. The server is being built for AI developers, large businesses and governments. It would focus on AI inference, which means running trained AI models and producing results, rather than mainly training those models. Apple is looking at two versions. One could use two M8 Ultra chips, while the bigger version could use four.
The said project began around a year ago. This is when Ternus was leading hardware work. He is now Apple’s chief executive. The plan shows how the company is looking to push its own silicon beyond consumer devices. The new project could widen the company’s reach in AI. Apple has also held talks with Nvidia about using its NVLink Fusion technology. The system includes networking hardware and software that can help several chips work together.
Why Nvidia could be part of the plan
The link with Nvidia is one of the most interesting parts of the story. Apple has spent years building its own chips and tightly controlling its hardware. Now, it may use Nvidia technology for one key part of an AI system. NVLink Fusion could be used to connect the planned M8 chips inside the server. The idea would let Apple’s processors communicate more effectively with wider data center systems.
The move would mark a change from the past. Apple and Nvidia have had a strained relationship for years. Apple stopped using Nvidia graphics chips after problems linked to some MacBook models. A closer working relationship would therefore be notable, even though no deal has been confirmed. AI is pushing companies to spend more on computing power. The demand is not only for huge systems that train models. Businesses also need machines that can run AI tools quickly and closer to their own data.

The Apple 2029 target is still far away
There is still plenty of uncertainty around the project. The server could be delayed, changed, or canceled. It could also arrive without Nvidia technology if Apple chooses another solution. Neither Apple nor Nvidia had immediately commented on the report, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the information. That makes the reported 2029 launch a target, not a confirmed release date.
If the plan goes ahead, it would be Apple’s first dedicated server product since the company ended its Xserve line in 2011. The new machine would also fit a wider push by technology firms to build AI hardware for companies that want more control over their systems. For now, the idea remains a work in progress.
Author’s Opinion
Apple returning to servers would be a notable change. The use of Nvidia networking makes the story even more interesting. Still, the plan is early, and 2029 is a long way off, so many parts could completely change before launch.
