Meta spends hundreds of millions on Microsoft AI every year

Meta spends hundreds of millions on Microsoft AI while building rival technology.

Meta has quietly become a major Microsoft AI customer. The social media giant is spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year on Azure. But there is a twist. Meta is also building tools that could rival Microsoft.

Metaโ€™s big AI spending

As reported by First Post, Meta reportedly spends hundreds of millions of dollars annually to use AI models via Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform. According to a source familiar with the situation, the company processes trillions of AI tokens on Azure each week. Both firms declined to comment on the figures. The scale of the spending shows how much Meta is investing in AI. The company is already spending huge sums on its own data centers and AI systems. Yet it still needs outside services to support its work.

The huge amount of spending makes Meta one of Microsoft’s biggest AI customers. Microsoft offers access to many AI models through its Foundry platform. The service had around 100,000 customers as of July. Meta is not using just one AI model. Its teams can access different models based on price and availability. This gives its developers more ways to test ideas and improve their own systems.

Why Meta still needs Microsoft

Meta is one of the biggest AI builders in the world. It is developing its own models and spending heavily on data centers. Still, AI work needs huge amounts of computing power. Meta’s use of Microsoft’s AI services shows the unusual way the technology race is developing. Even companies that build their own AI can depend on rivals for access to models and cloud tools.

Meta’s developers have also used OpenAI technology through Microsoft’s Foundry marketplace. The aim is to compare outside models with Meta’s own systems. This can help engineers see where their technology is strong and where it is weak and needs improvement. The fact that Meta processes billions of tokens every week is proof of the huge scale at which Metaโ€™s work in AI takes place. This may seem strange at first. Meta is spending money with Microsoft while trying to build more AI power of its own. But using outside tools can help the company move faster.

Meta could become a Microsoft rival

There is another important part of the story. Meta is working on its own API business. The planned service could let customers access different AI models through Meta. This could put the social media giant in competition with Microsoft’s Foundry. It may also help Meta reduce its need for outside platforms over time. This is not the first time Meta has relied on Microsoft before moving towards its own system. Microsoft once helped power web searches on Facebook through Bing.

Meta stopped using Bing for that purpose by late 2014. For now, however, the partnership remains valuable. Meta needs access to powerful AI tools, while Microsoft wants more companies to use Azure. The wider picture is also worth watching. Microsoft still depends heavily on a small group of major technology customers for its AI revenue. OpenAI alone provided about 70% of its overall AI revenue in its latest fiscal year, according to the Bloomberg report.

Authorโ€™s Opinion

Metaโ€™s spending shows how costly the AI race has become. Building your own systems does not mean working alone. For now, Microsoft gives Meta useful tools. But Metaโ€™s planned API service suggests this relationship may not last forever.
