Meta smart AI glasses may soon look very different. The company is reportedly developing Luna, a new AI glasses model that will not have a camera. An October target is now in focus. But the bigger story may be trust and privacy.
Meta eyes October for Luna glasses
As reported by Reuters, Meta plans to put out a new pair of smart glasses this fall. The model is known inside the firm as Luna. Meta may show it at Connect on 23 and 24 September. Shipments are said to start in October. Luna will focus on voice use. The glasses are said to have six built in mics.
Users will be able to talk to Meta AI and Muse, Meta’s new AI agent, while a side button will give quick access to Meta AI. The glasses will have small speakers. The frame is also said to be thin. Its arms may be slimmer than those on past Meta glasses. That could make Luna look more like a normal pair of glasses. Two styles are in the works, named Clubmaster and Burbank. The company has not shared the full specs, price, or final date.
Privacy is a key part of the plan for Meta
The new idea comes as privacy fears grow around smart glasses with cams. Meta’s current glasses can take photos and video. That has raised worry about filming without consent. Some users of past Meta glasses have faced blame after using them to film or harass people for posts and views. The glasses have a small light that shows when the cam is on. Meta also sent out a software fix last month. It can stop the cam from filming when that light is covered.
The issue is also how the tech is used in public. A pair with no cam removes one clear fear. People near the wearer may feel less uneasy if the glasses cannot take video. Still, Luna may bring new privacy questions. It will use six mics for its AI tools. Users can talk to Meta AI with no phone in hand. So voice use will still be a key part of the device. The no-cam model is part of Meta’s wider plan for smart glasses.

A new path for Meta’s AI glasses
Luna may show that Meta now sees smart glasses as more than a way to take photos. The new pair could focus on AI, music and voice tools. That may suit people who want hands-free help but do not need a cam. The timing also matters. Meta has put time and money into wearables for years. It is also adding more AI tools to its apps and devices, which could be great for business. A no-cam model gives the firm a new way to push AI without video.
For now, Luna is still a reported device. Meta has not fully confirmed it. The next key date is September 23 and 24. That is when Meta Connect is set to take place. If the reports are right, October could be the month when buyers first get the new glasses.
Author’s Opinion
The camera free idea makes sense in a world where people are more careful about privacy. But Luna’s success may depend on what it can do without a camera. Meta will need useful AI features to make that trade worth it.
