Meta has made a major move in the AI race today. The company has hired MongoDB CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai to lead a new business unit. The move could show how serious Meta is about selling AI to companies.
Meta CEO Zuckerberg puts Desai in charge
As reported by Reuters, Desai has left MongoDB to become Meta’s Chief Enterprise Platform Officer. Reporting directly to Mark Zuckerberg, he will oversee Meta’s newly established Enterprise Platform. The unit will focus on turning Meta’s AI tools into products that companies can use. Meta says the new business will bring together tools such as Muse, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code. The aim is simple.
Meta wants businesses and developers to use its AI tools for work, growth and tasks. That goal now matters to firms worldwide. The new platform is built to expand Meta’s AI business beyond its consumer products. It comes after the launch of Muse, an AI assistant that can handle tasks like booking travel and sending emails.
Why Meta wants CJ Desai?
Desai brings more than three decades of experience in enterprise software, cloud computing, cybersecurity, databases and product work. He has worked at major technology firms such as Oracle, Symantec, EMC, ServiceNow, Cloudflare and MongoDB. His career also explains why Meta chose him. He joined ServiceNow in 2016 and later became its president and chief operating officer. In 2024, he moved to Cloudflare as president of product and engineering. He became MongoDB’s president and CEO in November 2025.
Born in India, Desai grew up in Bengaluru before relocating to the United States with his family in 1993. He went on to pursue a master’s degree in computer science alongside an MBA at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. At Meta, his job will be less about one AI tool and more about building a business around many tools. He is being brought in as Meta pushes harder into enterprise AI and tries to turn its AI spending into a business for corporate users.

A big change for MongoDB too
The move is also a major moment for MongoDB. Desai had been CEO for less than a year before leaving for Meta. MongoDB has brought back former CEO Dev Ittycheria as interim chief executive as the company looks for a permanent successor. The news also hit the database company’s shares. MongoDB shares fell about 18% after Desai’s exit was announced. That showed how closely investors were watching the sudden leadership change.
Meta, meanwhile, is entering a crowded market. Microsoft, Google, OpenAI and other firms already offer AI tools for businesses. Meta’s challenge will be turning its models and agents into services that companies will pay for and use at scale. The first step is now clear. Desai has joined Zuckerberg’s team, and Meta has created a new home for its business AI push. The next test will be whether companies choose to use it.
Author’s Opinion
Meta’s decision to bring in Desai shows that enterprise AI is becoming a bigger part of its plans. His long work with business software may help. Still, the new platform will have to prove that it can turn AI tools into useful products for companies.
