OpenAI has made a surprising move in the AI race. The ChatGPT maker is buying tens of thousands of Apple Macs, not for normal office work, but to train computer-use AI agents. The reason behind the move may be more important than the machines themselves.
OpenAI turns to Mac for AI training

The company is seeking more Macs even after buying tens of thousands of them. Anthropic is also using Mac minis to test actions on an environment again and again, but it is renting them through Amazon Web Services. This is not a sign that Apple has replaced Nvidia in large AI training. The two uses are different. Big AI models still need huge GPU systems. Apple Macs are useful for a narrower task where an AI agent must work inside a real computer environment.
Why Apple Macs are useful to OpenAI?
Apple’s unified memory system is one reason its machines fit this new type of AI work. The CPU and GPU can use the same memory pool. This can help when a model and the computer system need to work closely together. The Mac mini and Mac Studio also offer a small design and active cooling. That makes them useful for long runs without the limits found on many laptops. The rising demand is already affecting supply. Some high-memory Mac Studio versions have faced much longer delivery times.

The company has not said that OpenAI caused this rise, so the two should not be treated as the same thing. Still, the timing is notable. Apple has refreshed its Mac mini and Mac Studio line-up earlier than usual. The new systems also place more focus on running AI workloads locally.
A new role for Apple
The bigger story is that AI agents need more than powerful chips. They need computer spaces where they can click, type, open software and learn from mistakes. That gives Apple hardware a new role in AI. Macs are no longer only tools for people. They can also act as part of the training setup for AI systems that are learning how to use computers.
