Google faces fresh pressure from its own workers. More than 4,500 employees have endorsed a petition calling for stronger job security protections. The move comes as the company continues layoffs while spending more on artificial intelligence (AI). This has created new worries among many workers.
Thousands of workers ask for better protection
As reported by The Guardian, over 4,500 Google employees have signed a petition calling on CEO Sundar Pichai to introduce stronger protections against workforce layoffs. The petition campaign was led by the Alphabet Workers Union, with nearly 100 employees assembling outside Google’s headquarters in Mountain View to show their support. As reported by Financial Express, the petition was later delivered to Pichai’s office. Workers say they are worried because layoffs have continued while the company keeps investing heavily in AI.
Employees have asked for several changes. They want guaranteed severance pay if they lose their jobs. They also want voluntary exit options before layoffs happen. Another request is the option to receive severance as paid leave. Workers also want Google to end performance review quotas, which they believe can unfairly affect jobs. As reported by The Times of India, these demands are meant to give employees more security during a time of big changes. According to the Alphabet Workers Union, this marks Google’s largest employee-led campaign focused on job security to date. Union leaders believe layoffs should only happen when there is no other choice.
AI growth raises more worries
As reported by NDTV, many employees believe Google’s fast AI expansion has increased concerns about future jobs. Workers say they support AI and new technology. However, they also want clear protection as the company changes its business. Google has reduced jobs across different teams in recent years. At the same time, it has increased spending on AI products and research. The company says AI is meant to improve work, not replace people. Union president Parul Koul said Google is making strong profits and continues to grow. She believes employees should also benefit from that success. She added that the company should protect the people who helped build it instead of relying on repeated layoffs.
